This past Thursday, Microsoft pulled the current back on their activities for SQL Server 2016 at their Data Driven event in New York. Among the new capabilities built into SQL Server 2016announced, were:

  • Business Intelligence for every employee on every device – including new mobile BI support for iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices
  • Advanced analytics using new R support that enables real-time predictive analytics on both operational and analytic data
  • Unique cloud capabilities that enable customers to deploy hybrid architectures that partition data workloads across on-premises and cloud based systems to save costs and increase agility

This is the most significant release of SQL Server that Microsoft has ever done.

In addition, Microsoft shocked the crowd with a migration offer from Oracle to SQL Server 2016 with free licenses.

Judson Althoff, Microsoft corporate vice president and head of North America sales and marketing, outlined the key differentiators built into SQL Server 2016 against those in the Oracle database.

“When we say everything’s built in, everything’s built in,” he said. When the built-in SQL Server 2016 capabilities were compared against similar functionality offered by Oracle products, “Oracle is nearly 12 times more expensive,” he said.

Migrate to SQL Server from Oracle and Get Free Licenses

“So if you are willing to migrate off of Oracle, we will actually give you free SQL Server licenses to do so,” Althoff said in his presentation. “For every instance of Oracle you have, free SQL Server licenses. All you have to do is have a Software Assurance agreement with Microsoft. If you’re willing to take this journey with us before the end of June, we’ll actually help and invest in the migration costs, put engineers on the ground to help you migrate off of Oracle.”

The Microsoft offer is available through June 30, 2016.  Learn more at Microsoft’s “Break free from Oracle” page.

This is a pretty brutal assault on Oracle – but we like it! Why? I think the below graphic sums it up:
SQL 2016

Microsoft has proven that their database system delivers – and Gartner agrees.   They recognized Microsoft as an industry leader in the 2015 Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems.

Gartner ODMS Quadrant 2015

Gartner also recognized Microsoft as a leader in their 2016 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms. Microsoft has clearly earned their place at the table, which is why FlexMI is built with this powerful database component.
